Lawrence & Dennell’s Laid-Back Maternity Session

Lawrence and Dennell are 5 days away from delivering their baby! We are so excited for these two! We’ve been able to follow them through the years, first with shooting a family portrait/engagement session, and then covering their awesome wedding in 2008!

Rachel put out a call for some willing models – and Lawrence happily volunteered his wife to be in the shots, but with the caveat that we shoot fast since she is due any day! We took the challenge, and we hope you like the results. We wondered around downtown Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, to grab these laid-back shots! And, we can’t believe how spectacular expectant mother Dennell is – she looks just like she does when she’s not pregnant! No fair! Can’t wait to meet your new lil’ one!

! This is the look you get when you question a man’s strength:

Derek & Andrea…and Jakob, too!

Shooting an engagement shoot in Sylvan Lake, Alberta – home to the awesome Derek and Andrea – was an adventure in all things white. White frosted trees. White snowy roads. White endless fields. White smiles against bright red cheeks. Stunning!

After hitting up the snowy trails of an obliging golf course, we headed to downtown Sylvan to drive out onto the frozen lake. There were a few other brave souls out on the ice, including skaters, quadders, ice-fishers, and cops patrolling the three.

Derek’s son, Jakob, also joined us at the shoot in order to grab a few fun family photos, and after he’d had a chance to warm up from the frigid wind and temps, he had a blast on the ice.

Here are a few of our favourites from the day, we hope you enjoy the crisp, clear light in these snowy shots!

Jordan and Becky’s Wedding

You’ve probably seen Jordan and Becky before; we’ve posted about them twice now, chronicling their journey to proposal and engagement. We’ve enjoyed summer and fall weather on our shoots with them as we hiked through the river valley, or climbed all over the Legislature, but both fall short of the beauty we got to experience with them on their winter wedding day.

Both the bride and the groom arrived early to the Union Bank Inn to do the final stages of their preparation before their intimate weekday ceremony. From there we all travelled to the Louise McKinney Park for formals, where we noticed early on that knee-deep snow does not work well with the beautiful open-toed shoes the ladies were wearing. Opting to jump out of her shoes completely, and even going barefoot on the snowy sidewalk, wins Becky our Bravest Bride award.

We stole a few hazy sunsetting photos in the rivervalley, before we headed on to the University of Alberta and beyond. We had some downtown hidden-gem locations we wanted to hit – and we weren’t letting them slip away even though the sun had disappeared completely – so we sent the bridal party on ahead without us. Thank goodness for obliging security guards on freezing cold days, which gained us access to these areas! Finally, we ended the night back where we started, with an all-out-party-hardy reception and an awesome candy bar.

Thank you again Jordan and Becky for choosing us to travel with you on your adventure together. We look forward to seeing what comes next for you!

A special shout-out to bridesmaid and makeup artist Mallory Shwetz of Keyk’d Makeup Artistry, for making the girls look so glamorous!

The Daum Family

With only 17 days until baby #2 is due, the Daum family called us for a quick maternity/family shoot. Playing with soon-to-be-big-sister Kestra kept us all laughing, and you can see in the photos below what a difference a smile can make.

Greg & Julie’s Winter Wedding

We headed out to Neerlandia, Alberta, for Greg and Julie’s amazing winter wedding. It was a photographer’s dream come true, full of fireworks, fresh fields of snow, a secluded cabin, a huge bonfire, sleds, a home-made hockey rink, a converted yellow bus, and some of the best winter sunsets we’ve ever had the pleasure to photograph. And on top of it all, we had the sweetest, most adventurous couple to shoot too!

Meeting Greg and Julie at their respective homes early in the morning, we started shooting as they prepared themselves for their big day. We then headed over to the Neerlandia Christian Reformed Church for a standing-room-only wedding ceremony. After a rocking exit by the bride and groom on their new snowmobiles, we headed out into Alberta’s beautiful fields and forests to explore Julie’s family’s cabin, and later, Greg’s family’s farm. Greg and Julie (and their awesome party) refused to shy away from the thigh-deep snow drifts and hair-singing giant bonfires to get these jaw-dropping formals, and we couldn’t be happier with the results.

We truly think this wedding is winter eye-candy, and we can’t thank you two enough for choosing us to share in your day. We felt completely at home with your friends and family, and can’t wait to travel out Neerlandia’s way in the future.

Take a peek at a few of our favourites from their day!!.

Thanks again to the best assistant (and our really good friend) ever – Aadil!
